New rail trail opens in western New York

In October the Town of Lancaster, just east of Buffalo, officially opened its new Heritage Trail for public use. Following the former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western railroad bed, the four-mile trail extends from Walter Winter Drive on the eastern edge of the Village of Lancaster eastward to Town Line Road. The adjacent Town of Alden hopes to continue the trail from Town Line Road east to the Genesee County line. Parking is available near each end of the trail.

As Town Supervisor Robert Giza noted, the Town has transformed an overgrown, and potentially dangerous, abandoned railroad line into a safe alternate transportation route and recreational facility to enhance the health and quality of life of community residents.
