Riding for a special cause

Marjorie Zack rode with her family on our 2010 Cycling the Erie Canal Bike Tour to commemorate her sister Mary Lou, who passed away from pancreatic cancer.  Through serendipity, the family gathered to begin the ride on Mary Lou’s 68th birthday, July 10, 2010.

In addition to supporting New York’s parks and trails through their participation on the bike tour, the “Louie on the Erie” team raised money for pancreatic cancer research, CaringBridge, a dynamic e-message system, and an animal shelter in Illinois near where Mary Lou lived.

The family’s closeness and high spirits were evident; their youngest rider, seven-year-old Harrison, biked 42 unassisted miles the first day, earning him the “youngest self-propelled biker award” at the final banquet on Saturday night.

One privilege which comes with hosting bike tours is the capacity to provide a unique and special opportunity for families and individuals who wish to gather together and support one another.  We are very proud to have such great cyclists as the “Louie on the Erie” team along for the ride.
