Fracking Comment Period Extended

The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) released a revised Draft Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement along with Proposed High-Volume Hydraulic Fracturing Regulations in September. Originally, comments were due Dec. 12, allowing the public only 90 days to review and comment on the lengthy and highly technical proposal for regulating industrial gas drilling in NYS.

DEC and Governor Cuomo announced on Wednesday that they have extended the comment period an extra 30 days — comments are now due Jan. 11, 2012.

While the proposed regulations include a recommendation that surface drilling be banned on state-owned lands – including parks – oil and gas lobbyists are calling on the Governor and the state to rescind the ban. Tell DEC to uphold the public trust and keep fracking out of state parks. Learn more.
