Local parks facing budget axe

As government budgets at all levels continue to shrink, parks are feeling the squeeze. Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino’s proposed 2012 budget includes significant cuts to parks and recreation. The proposal calls for cutting the parks department by 5%, including closing six nature centers and cutting funding for special events. Staffing would be eliminated and the building will be closed at the Cranberry Lake Preserve, Croton Point Nature Center, Read Wildlife Sanctuary, Lenoir Preserve, Marshlands Conservancy and Trailside Nature Museum.
