Future of Letchworth’s historic Portageville Bridge hanging in the balance

Comments are being sought on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for replacement of the 1875 iconic Portageville Bridge which carries Norfolk Southern freight trains over the Genesee River within Letchworth State Park in western New York. The current weight and speed restrictions on the historic bridge were identified in the 2009 New York State Rail Plan as one of the top ten rail bottlenecks in New York.

The DEIS examines two alternatives:

  • new bridge on a parallel alignment and removal of the existing bridge
  • new bridge on a parallel alignment and conveyance of the existing bridge to a suitable new owner

NYSOPRHP has stated that it would not be financially feasible for it to acquire, rehabilitate, and maintain the existing bridge as a pedestrian crossing within the park. Presently, an alternative suitable owner for the bridge has not been identified.

A public hearing will be held Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at the Genesee River Restaurant & Reception Center, 134 North Main Street, Mount Morris, NY 14510.  The hearing will be preceded by an opportunity to meet with project officials and view displays beginning at 4:30 p.m.  In the event of inclement weather, the hearing will be held on January 17, 2013, at the same time and location.

Comments must be submitted to NYSDOT by February 1, 2013.
